Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before coming to dance. Question not here? Write to us.

The practice

What is Contact Improvisation?

A dance born from listening and physical contact between two or more partners. A sensory exploration reinvented in every moment, created in the USA in 1972 (Steve Paxton). There is no choreography: we follow weight, touch and shared movement.

Do I need a partner or a particular level?

The jam is open to all, with or without experience. We change partners throughout the session — come alone or accompanied.

Before you come

Do I need to register?

No, no advance registration. You can arrive and leave whenever you like during the jam. If it is your first time, come rather at the start to soak up the atmosphere.

Do I need to have danced before?

Not at all. Beginners are very welcome. A jam can also be a good place to learn by watching from the side.

Is there a minimum age?

The practice is open to all, teenagers welcome. Children can dance accompanied by a responsible adult on the floor. There is no age limit.

I have a disability — can I come?

Yes, it’s possible. Just write to us first so we can look at the situation and accessibility together.

I don’t speak French — can I come?

Yes. Dance is a language: no language skills are needed. We are happy to welcome you in French and English.

During the jam

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing that moves, covers shoulders, torso and legs (we slide on the floor) and can get dirty. Avoid zips, large buttons, belts and jewellery that can disturb or snag. Soft knee pads are a plus.

Do I need anything special?

A water bottle, a hairband for long hair, and a change of clothes if you sweat a lot. Barefoot or socks (no shoes on the floor).

Are there hygiene rules?

Please come clean, with trimmed nails, and avoid perfumes, oils or clothing full of animal hair (some people are allergic). If you have contagious symptoms, stay at home.

What happens during a jam?

An open space to practise contact improv. Some dance continuously, others rest, watch, or move in and out of the floor. The space is for dancing: conversations, phones and massage happen outside the room.

Practical info

How does payment work?

On a “conscious price” basis: 15 to 25 Fr per jam; if you come from far away, you pay 5 Fr less. Contribution via TWINT to 079 231 2127, or on site.

Where and when?

Every Thursday from 7:30 pm to 10 pm, Chemin du Verger 10, 1800 Vevey, 4th floor (5 min on foot from the station). Note: the building door closes automatically at 8 pm.

What if I arrive after 8 pm?

The building door closes automatically at 8 pm: after that time, entry is no longer possible. If you plan to arrive later, let us know in advance by message so we can let you in.

Is there insurance?

Practice is at the participants’ own responsibility. Insurance (accident / liability) is each person’s own concern. Take care of yourself and others, and stop a dance if something does not feel right.

Can I say no to a dance?

Always. You can refuse a dance, stop one, or change its pace at any time, without giving a reason. Consent is at the heart of the practice: listen to yourself and to the other.
